Vitamin B12 - Cobalamins

Vitamin B12 or Cobalamins is a water soluble vitamin and needs to be replenished every day. It plays an important role in energy metabolism, formation of red blood cells and maintenance of the central nervous system.

Vitamin B12 occurs in foods that come from animals. Vegans, who do not consume any animal product are at an increased risk for vitamin B12 deficiency. B12 deficiency can also occur due to inadequate absorption in the intestine. This may happen due to infections or inflammation in the intestines.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause premature aging, fatigue, insomnia, poor concentration and memory, aggression, anemia, numbness in the arms and legs, weakness and loss of balance.

Vitamin B12 is found primarily from animal products like liver, yogurt, dairy products, fish, clams, oysters, nonfat dry milk, salmon and sardines. Vegans have to ensure they take B12 supplements.
