Blood pressure is defined as the force of the blood that is pushing against the wall of the arteries as it is being carried from the heart to all the body tissues and organs. Hypertension Diet
- Clinical studies have shown that nutrients found in both fruits and vegetables - especially magnesium, fiber and potassium - these could lower blood pressure. Make sure you get at least 8-10 servings of vegetables and fruits everyday.
- Aspartame has been shown to cause mood swings and raise blood pressure. Also, each time we drink a beverage laced with aspartame, the amino acids phenylamine and aspartic acid are dumped into the blood. This can cause fluctuations in blood sugar and eventually insulin resistance, a precursor for higher blood pressure.
- Reduce your salt and increase your potassium intake. A combination of excess sodium and a deficiency of sodium is a common hypertension statistic. Avoid canned and highly processed food and eat more of banana, kelp, apples, asparagus, cabbage, oranges, tomatoes and alfalfa to up your potassium.
- Dehydration increases the risk of hypertension, drink a glass of water every two waking hours.
- Onions and garlic are common kitchen ingredients that can be used in food. They add flavor and lower your blood pressure.
- Saturated, hydrogenated, and partially hydrogenated fats aggravate high blood pressure and place a terrible burden on the arteries and heart. Eliminate animal products, margarine, butter, refined vegetable oils and shortening.
- Moderate consumption of alcohol can lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases, but more than one alcohol beverage a day can be a potential for abuse or dependence, possible interference with vitamin absorption and worsening health.
- There is a theory that caffeinated drinks may increase blood pressure and alter the supply of blood to the heart. Stick to moderate amounts.
