Ash Gourd Health Benefits

Ashgourd is useful for boosting memory, overcoming insomnia, constipation, anemia and intestinal worms. Ashgourd or Winter melon is a nutritive fruit that grows from a vine. It has a long shelf life, can be stored for up to 12 months. Ash gourd consists of substantial amount of moisture and is used as a vegetable in Indian soups and stews.

The Ashgourd fruit is sweet, cooling, laxative, diuretic, aphrodisiac and styptic.

It is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Insomnia

    Ashgourd juice has a sedating effect on the system and is an effective remedy against insomnia.
  • Burning Urination

    Consumption of ash gourd juice increases the production of urine and also eliminates small urinary stones.
  • Constipation

    A dual combination of powdered ash gourd seeds mixed with honey in the morning followed by ash gourd fruit juice in the evening flushes out the worms. Shelled ashgourd seeds are anabolic and promote tissue growth.
  • Anaemia

    The fruits and leaves are dried and powdered. A teaspoon of this is taken everyday with a glass of buttermilk.
  • Memory lapses

    Ashgourd juice makes a good brain tonic and serves as a nervine stimulant.
  • Bleeding

    Ash gourd is a good blood coagulant. Internal and external bleeding can be arrested by a regular intake of ash gourd juice. It helps in conditions like the bleeding from the lungs and nose, piles and haematuria.
  • High Cholesterol

    Regular intake of ash gourd juice dilates the blood vessels.
