The plant is referred to as "Aduthoda" in the south Indian language. Aduthoda means "that which a goat does not touch", that is owing to its bitter taste! Malabar nut is useful in treating lung and bronchiole disorders. A mixture of malabar nut, pepper, sugar, ghee and honey is advised for asthma, bronchitis and cough. Vasaka relieves phlegm and gives relief where the phlegm is thick by liquefying it.Bleeding disorders
Malabar nut has blood purifying properties. It is very effective in dysentery, menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, bleeding piles or bleeding from any wounds. Drink a sweetened decoction of the leaves to overcome bleeding disorders.Tuberculosis
Malabar nut is very beneficial in overcoming tuberculosis. The juice of the Vasa leaves are used to liquify the sputum.Painful Joints
Apply a poultice of slightly warmed leaves on fresh wounds, rheumatic joints and swellings. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and can alleviate rheumatic symptoms.Skin Disorders
Malabar nut has Kushthahara properties and is useful in treating skin diseases. A decoction of the leaves can be consumed internally and applied externally to resolve itchy skin conditions like scabies and eczema.
