Hindu Gods and Goddesses
"There can be as many Hindu Gods as there are devotees to suit the moods, feelings, emotions and social backgrounds of the devotees. "
These were the words of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, one of India's greatest saints. It has been said that though Hinduism has 330 million gods, it is the Supreme Being or God having various aspects. Hindus may worship one or more chosen deities or "Ishta Devata" as it represents a particular aspect of the Supreme Being. Thus, if a Hindu wants to pray for material success, he may pray to Lakshmi. But, just as the sunlight does not have an independent existence without the sun, any Hindu deity does not have an independent existence from the Supreme Being or Brahman.
